AARTO Act

The Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act (not surprisingly more commonly referred to by its acronym the AARTO Act) introduces a new system of issuing summonses and admission of guilt fines.

The new procedure, administered by the Road Traffic Infringement Agency, seeks to streamline the collection of fines.

First implemented in Tshwane (Pretoria) on 1 July 2008, it was extended to include Johannesburg on 1 November 2008.

Only once it is rolled out to the rest of the country, will the much talked about penalty points system for traffic offences be introduced.
