Fuel price in South Africa

The petrol retail price at the pump is regulated by government, and adjusted on the first Wednesday of the month. Calculation of the new price is done by Central Energy Fund (CEF) on behalf of the Department of Energy.

The pump price comprises of a number of elements which can be divided into international and domestic costs. The international element, or Basic Fuel price (BFP), is based on what it would cost a South African importer to buy petrol from an international refinery and shipping costs. The domestic costs are made up of taxes, levies, wholesale and retail margins as well as the cost of moving fuels from the coastal refineries inland by pipeline and road tankers.

The final pump price is dependent on location of the retailer and the price zone of the magisterial district.
The diesel wholesale price is regulated but not the retail price. The retail margin is estimated to be similar to regulated retail margin on petrol.
